  Alexander Hunter Family
Alexander Hunter (ca. 1775 – 1865) was a prominent citizen of Abbeville District, South Carolina from the time he settled there about 1800 until his death in December, 1865. This is the story of his family, beginning with his grandfather’s arrival in Pennsylvania from northern Ireland in 1730, and continuing with his forebears’ migration to Virginia, North Carolina, and northeast Georgia.  The story continues with Alexander’s life as an Abbeville planter, including his involvement in public education, in politics, and as a deacon of Rocky River Presbyterian Church. Alexander’s large family began with two sons borne by his first wife. In 1829, Alexander remarried, to Jane Terry, the young widow of Dr. Joseph B. Gibert, Sr., and the mother of five young children. Alexander and Jane were the parents of four more children. Between them, the couple had more than fifty grandchildren! Names of related families include Whitworth, Steele, Terry, Gibert, Harris, Tate, Davis, Cunningham, Lee, Bannerman, Barnett, Carter, Cromartie, De Launy, Edmunds, Lockett, Martin, Massey, Strange, Moore, Osborne, Hopkinson, van Meter, and many others.
